St Peter's Anglican Church

Newboyne

The first St. Peter’s Mission was established in the community of Newboyne between 1845 and 1850 and a frame Church was built in 1852. The present impressive sandstone Church was built circa 1872 and is one of the most elaborate in the township. St. Peter’s is situated on a hill overlooking the vault (the last one in the township), the cemetery and the picturesque countryside.

The interior of the Church was finished between 1878 and 1889. There are beautiful stained glass windows in the chancel and in the nave. Of particular note is the fine wooden detail inside the Church, with and exceptional high-pitched wooden ceiling. The original interior stenciling was recently restored using archival evidence.

St. Peter’s is rectangular in shape with a short facade, an apse that projects from the rear of the Church and a tower with steeple. The naturally finished sandstone is set in broken courses. The roof is gabled with high pitch, is covered with metal and has decorative cresting along the peaks. Three small triangular dormers with decorative trim are located on each side of the main roof. There are two small stone chimneys. The windows are gothic in nature, capped with stone voussoirs and keystones.
